By the time the FDA approved articaine in the US, dentists in a European country with a population of more than 80 million were already very familiar with its abilities. Recent evidence significantly raises the ante.
More popular in medicine perhaps because of the simplicity of their formulations, some specific drug combinations demonstrated superior effectiveness compared with vasoconstrictor-containing local anesthetics currently available in dental cartridges.
While every FDA-approved dental LA drug has its indications, in the specific situations and challenges in which these two agents demonstrated greater effectiveness, they did so with wide margins of superiority. Their adoption does not guarantee success every time of course (LA is estimated to fail about 10% of the time, across all disciplines), but these two agents are often capable of avoiding and/or reversing downhill slides. Even in their absence, however, there are modifications to common strategies capable of accomplishing similar outcomes. A simple case will highlight the drugs and strategies, as well as the rationale behind the strategies.
Participants can look forward to learning why, how, and when the two drugs and some specific modifications are capable of increasing the odds of success.
